Counter UAS funding advances with Anduril and Zone 5 testing

The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) selected Anduril Industries and Zone 5 Technologies for the Counter UAS funding initiative. Both companies are developing interceptors to counter Group 3 and higher aerial threats while maintaining affordability and production scalability. Initial design sprints and successful flight testing were completed less than a year after selection. Additional funding was awarded to refine prototypes, integrate with combat systems, and prepare for live fire testing in 2026.

Technical progress

Both Anduril and Zone 5 are building interceptors using commercial off-the-shelf components to keep costs low. Their prototypes employ modular open system designs to allow rapid subsystem integration and future upgrades. This approach enables high-rate manufacturing without the complexity of expensive interceptors currently in use.

Development timeline

The first sprint produced baseline flight data and actionable feedback from warfighters. As a result, iterative design changes are underway before further safety and qualification testing. Live fire events are scheduled for summer 2026, following current integration and safety phases.

Modular design

Counter UAS funding supports designs that avoid over-engineering while meeting military certification standards. The emphasis is on flexibility, modularity, and compatibility with existing combat systems. Both prototypes are being optimized for mass production using modern manufacturing methods.

Industry context

The U.S. Department of Defense reviewed more than 65 applicants before selecting Anduril and Zone 5. According to DIU program manager Joshua Zike, “The Counter NEXT project is focused on leveraging the best-in-breed commercially derived technology and processes to accelerate development.”

The competitive environment favors companies able to combine modularity, cost efficiency, and production readiness. By positioning their designs for scalability, Anduril and Zone 5 may gain an advantage as defense demand for layered counter UAS solutions accelerates.

Strategic significance

Funding tied to flight testing indicates DIU intends to quickly transition prototypes toward deployment. Modular open system architecture also positions both companies for rapid adaptation to evolving threats and cost challenges. For startups, the takeaway is that dual-use innovation aligned with cost-effective manufacturing is drawing sustained defense investment.
